visual hierarchy* is what happens when you walk into a room. It happens when you look out your window, open up your web browser, or witness a car accident. Constantly occurring, visual hierarchies are the structures that build your understanding of whatever it is you’re looking at.
The brain tells the eyes what to look at based on its level of importance. Living in an age where viewing thousands of images is a daily occurrence, it is more difficult to create something of interest which captivates a viewer for more than 3 seconds. Thus, understanding visual hierarchies is crucial to understanding the visual arts. It is the language of composition and the formal elements of images both flat, 3d, or video. The purpose of this site is to generate an environment for the exploration and research of visual hierarchies for all artwork in the visual realm.
