Kate Brandt Pink opens at the University of Wisconsin Union Art Gallery tomorrow (friday march 5th) from 5-8pm

MILWAUKEE—KATE BRANDT PINK, an international group exhibition, will take place at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from March 5, 2010 to April 2, 2010 in the Union Art Gallery. The art in the exhibition confronts power roles, gender, race, fame, and class issues within the perspective of the greater arts community. It opens with a reception from 5-8pm on Friday, March 5. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

In 1960, neo-Dada artist Yves Klein made a splash at an exhibition by using nude female models as living paintbrushes, making work with his signature color, International Klein Blue. UWM artist Kate Brandt comments on, confronts, and even exorcises the ghost of this “legendary” artist with a group exhibition of visual performance artists all of whom use her self selected shade of pink. In their work, these contemporary artists address ideas of gender, power roles, race, fame, class issues and more in a variety of mediums, including live performances (at the opening reception), photography, sculpture, video, and painting.

Artists include: Kate Gilmore, Ryan Trecartin, Franko B, Stuart Semple, Heather Warren-Crow, Kate Brandt, Kimberly Brandt, Cassandra Smith, A. Bill Miller, Emily Walley, Kristen Olsen, Naomi Shersty, Sarah Holden, Anna Helgeson, Richard Mutz, and many others.

***Heather Warren-Crow invites viewers to participate in her work by documenting her opening night performance using cell phone cameras. Please make her dream come true by posting a short video to YouTube and emailing the link to art_gallery@uwm.edu

Your video will become part of a playlist that will be exhibited at the Union Art Gallery.

Ernest Concepcion – Badass. Brutal. Creative.

Posted: November 21st, 2009 | Author: Sean | Filed under: Artists | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Ernest Concepcion is a BBC artist, that is an artist whose work is Badass, Brutal, and Creative.  His drawings are filled with so much content that one can get lost in them even from a computer screen.  I would absolutely love to see his work live to truly appreciate his taste for detail.

Here is part of his artist statement pertaining to his Line Wars Series (images below):

From tables vs. chairs to cowboys vs. aliens and cookies vs. milk, The Line Wars began as a series of over 100, 9×12 inches, ink drawings that emerged from sketches and doodles–the most rudimentary expression of visual thinking. The images are based on the entertainments of childhood and adolescence: Video games, action figures, strategy board games–always two forces opposing one another. The Line Wars is a celebration of making impulsive, nonchalant drawings, as well as a personal journey into nostalgia and an homage to geekdom.

This guy’s line quality turns me on.  The massive amount of work he produces is inspiring, but more so is the quality in each fragment of quantity.  Working with color and line Zak Smith pushes both painting and drawing mediums to the brink.  I love how detailed his work is, there is so much to look at and the images vibrate with energy.  A friend of mine has a couple of his books and mentioned that he does porn in addition to his artwork.  The money he makes from performing is supposedly all donated to charity, which I find pretty awesome.   Anyways, enough of my thoughts.  What do you think of his work?  Check out his website for 1000+ more images.

I’m taking a summer class with Katie Martin, a kickass teacher and artist.  Logically one could correctly assume that the class is also kickass.  The first assignment, 7 sculptures in 7 days, has led me down some interesting paths.  Here are glimpses of what my hands are doing in class:

Basically I’m having too much fun with candles, if “too much fun” even exists.  I really like this period in the class because of the emphasis on play.  Playing with the materials loosens you up, there are no standards or expectations.  I’ve noticed that I get more involved with these candle sculptures more than some of my drawings and I think its because of the Play Element.

Ridding one’s mind of standards and expectations is extremely difficult to do.  Being trained to constantly think about spaces I start coming up with thousands of subconsious rules for how reality is constructed.  Its how I realize my environment.  Even though I’m a confused artist who doesn’t know what to make my mind knows what it likes and what it wants in an image.

In class each student is required to present and artist/artist group/ or something art related.  My other classmates have really inspired me.    I’ve decided to start a new project that is just about making and making continuously.  As always, more on this later..
