Kate Brandt Pink opens at the University of Wisconsin Union Art Gallery tomorrow (friday march 5th) from 5-8pm

MILWAUKEE—KATE BRANDT PINK, an international group exhibition, will take place at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from March 5, 2010 to April 2, 2010 in the Union Art Gallery. The art in the exhibition confronts power roles, gender, race, fame, and class issues within the perspective of the greater arts community. It opens with a reception from 5-8pm on Friday, March 5. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

In 1960, neo-Dada artist Yves Klein made a splash at an exhibition by using nude female models as living paintbrushes, making work with his signature color, International Klein Blue. UWM artist Kate Brandt comments on, confronts, and even exorcises the ghost of this “legendary” artist with a group exhibition of visual performance artists all of whom use her self selected shade of pink. In their work, these contemporary artists address ideas of gender, power roles, race, fame, class issues and more in a variety of mediums, including live performances (at the opening reception), photography, sculpture, video, and painting.

Artists include: Kate Gilmore, Ryan Trecartin, Franko B, Stuart Semple, Heather Warren-Crow, Kate Brandt, Kimberly Brandt, Cassandra Smith, A. Bill Miller, Emily Walley, Kristen Olsen, Naomi Shersty, Sarah Holden, Anna Helgeson, Richard Mutz, and many others.

***Heather Warren-Crow invites viewers to participate in her work by documenting her opening night performance using cell phone cameras. Please make her dream come true by posting a short video to YouTube and emailing the link to art_gallery@uwm.edu

Your video will become part of a playlist that will be exhibited at the Union Art Gallery.

UWM Union Art Gallery: Flora/Fauna Opens this Friday!

The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee Union Art Gallery is starting the semester right with an intense, brutal, and beautiful exhibit with artists Kako Ueda and Roxanne Jackson.  Details Below:

Flora/Fauna

Work by Kako Ueda and Roxanne Jackson

January 29-February 26, 2010

Opening reception: Friday, January 29, 5-8pm

Gallery talk with artists: 4pm

Kako Ueda and Roxanne Jackson focus on physical nature and human nature in abstract and inventive ways.  They share an interest in dualities, such as nature and culture, light and dark. In their work, the natural world is intricate, fascinating, grotesque, frightening – something to be drawn deeply into and sometimes shocked by.

New York artist Kako Ueda constructs her work from intricate hand-cut paper which references, in part, paper cutting from Japan where she was born. Minneapolis-based Roxanne Jackson works three-dimensionally with clay to form large compositions of human/animal hybrids.

For those of you in the Milwaukee area, be sure to clear your Thursday on November 19th for the opening of the show.  It is guaranteed to rock!  The show is being put on by the UWM Union Art Gallery (UAG).  Here is their blog.

More legible details:

November 19 – December 18th
Opening reception: Thursday, November 19, 5-8pm
Gallery talk with Adam Parker Smith: Friday, November 20th, 4pm

This group exhibition looks at masculinity as represented by male artists working in forms and mediums often considered to be the domain of women. Using materials like thread, yarn and felt in practices like weaving, knitting and embroidery , these visually compelling two and three-dimensional works aim to challenge preconceptions about the subject and forms of men’s art. With a literal construction of masculinity, these fiber artists present contrasts meant to perplex and intrigue.

Artists include : Youn Woo Chaa, Robert Conger, Angelo Filomeno, Craig Fisher, Kent Henrickson, Mark Newport, Chris Niver, Adam Parker Smith, Paul Villinski, Michael Brennand- Wood, and Rob Wynne.

getting busy with it_sBusy as the snow plows are going to be in a couple months, I’ve been cranking out a fair bit of work (relative to last semester). I’ve also been showing quite a bit more (Center St. Daze, Riverwest Artwalk, RAA Member Show) and have a couple more shows coming up this month. For gallery night tomorrow (friday) I will be showing at Mark David Gray’s studio down in the 3rd ward from 6-9pm. If you’re on facebook here is more info.

New show, coming up fast:

Movimientos: Two Generations of Chicana Artists

Opening Reception: Thursday Sept. 24, 5-8

Gallery Talk with Favianna Rodriguez:
Friday, Sept 25 4pm

In this group exhibition, contemporary artists
representing two generations of Chicana feminist
artists will exhibit an array of work that reflects pride
in their Mexican heritage as well as patterns of racial
inequality in the United States for Mexican Americans.
Exhibiting prints, paintings and installation, these
artists open dialogues about sexism, racism,
homophobia, and poverty as interlinked issues for
women of Mexican descent in the US. These Chicana
artist-activists participated in or grew out of the
Chicano movimiento of the 1960s and 70s which
sought to define a cultural and political identity for
Americans of Mexican descent.

The first generation is represented by
Ester Hernandez and the second by
Favianna Rodriguez and Melanie Cervantes.

Portrait Society and Madison’s Ugliest Sculpture

Posted: August 31st, 2009 | Author: Sean | Filed under: Artists, Upcoming | No Comments »

A couple gallery nights ago I checked out the Portrait Society and was really impressed.  Recently I stumbled across a blog post on their website about this sculpture a couple block away from where I used to live: http://portraitsocietygallery.wordpress.com/2009/06/07/madisons-tall-controversy/

I dislike this statue very much, aesthetically at least.  Every time I return home I cringe a little bit inside and squint my eyes.  However, reading this post reminded me to consider the artist’s perspective.  It reminded me of an opinion I heard which was that the sculpture was intended to look ugly and in a comedic way does so beautifully.  Now when I return to Madison I will smile at this statue and appreciate it for its sense of humor at the expense of american football (and the drunken masses that it inspires).

Back to checking out some awesome artwork at the Portrait Society.

As summer in Milwaukee draws to a close there are several fall events which I will be participating in.  Both are local to my neighborhood: Riverwest.

The first is Center St. Daze a street festival stretching many blocks and filled with art, events, and food.  If there is one last hurrah for summer, its this event.  Come check it out on September 12th!

The second is Art Walk 2009. My house will be one of many stops Saturday and Sunday October 3rd and 4th.  I would love if you came.

For those in the MKE area, I alert you of a new art show at Abu’s (1978 N Farwell Ave – see map below).  It has some of my drawings and paintings from last year as well as a selection of my latest pen drawings.  In addition, there is photography by Nathaniel Haack.  Abu’s has renovated and re-opened under new management; the food is great and the prices are just as good.  Definitely check it out, you won’t regret it!
